From courtyards to libraries, or resorts to homes there has been a common thread that pulled over people to these spaces that made them drop their shoulders instantly. Tranquility. To put into perspective, we have been wired to psychologically and physiologically feel safe, calm and inspired in places when their design satisfies deep-seated human biological needs and socio-environmental expectations. Modern day architecture has succeeded spectacularly as an industrial engineering project, but it has profoundly failed as a human biological project. Homes have become pods of isolation and detachment, surrounded by the commercial chaos that fires up the constant loop of brain’s false alarms of flight of fight. This brings us to ponder on the question, to what extent should human flourishing be considered a design problem? This article works down to elucidate on the dynamics behind building human-centric conscious spaces as well as the systemic lapse of such considerations in today’s structures and their implications.

Natural landscapes inherently trigger peace because our biology evolved to read these environments as safe, resourceful, and predictable. Therefore, great architects and designers intentionally replicate certain natural rules within built environments to trigger the exact same psychological response. There are certain considerations that add to the peace and harmony of a structure such as:

FRACTAL GEOMETRY: Nature is full of repeating self-similar patterns called fractals (found in ferns, clouds, and coastlines). The human visual cortex processes these specific geometric patterns with minimal effort, inducing alpha brain waves associated with relaxed alertness.

ACOUSTICAL DAMPENING: Peaceful structures consciously isolate people from the outside world. High ceilings, fabric panels, or central courtyard fountains absorb sharp echoes, replacing chaotic city noise with a soft, comforting acoustic envelope.

CIRCADIAN ALIGNMENT AND DIFFUSED LIGHTING: Spaces designed to shift naturally with the color temperature of daylight help stabilize human biorhythms. Instant tranquility in a building relies heavily on indirect lighting. Spaces like Japanese tea houses or minimalist chapels use deep eaves, screens, and strategically placed openings to diffuse harsh sunlight, creating soft gradients of light and shadow that soothe the eyes.

MICRO-CLIMATE CONTROL: These spaces alter your physical state. They generally offer cooler air, shaded zones, and dampened acoustics. Parks use trees to lower temperatures, temples use thick stone walls, and courtyards trap cool air while blocking wind.

ABSENCE OF COGNITIVE DEMAND: These environments do not demand your active attention. Commercial streets bombard you with signs, traffic, and choices. In contrast, a courtyard or a library offers “soft fascination.” Your eyes can drift without your brain needing to make decisions or dodge threats.

The absolute common thread linking the consciously built places that propagate tranquility is intentional spatial containment that filters out chaos. Every single one of these spaces acts as a sanctuary by creating a distinct boundary between the frantic outside world and a controlled, predictable inside world.

Now, as it comes down to a realisation that architecture and human nature don’t work exclusively but rather are intertwined to an essential pillar of design, the question arises to what extent should human flourishing be considered a design problem in today’s world? Has modernist approach to architecture succeeded or does it have enough drawbacks to rethink the current norms?

Human flourishing should be considered a design problem to a profound extent, because human biology and psychology are fundamentally mismatched with modern urban environments. Our nervous systems evolved to thrive in natural settings, yet we spend over 90% of our lives inside artificial structures.

When a temple, library, or courtyard instantly induces peace, it is not an accident or a stroke of luck, it is a successful piece of spatial engineering. Designing for human flourishing is the deliberate practice of closing this evolutionary gap, turning spaces from mere containers of human bodies into active catalysts for mental and physical well-being.

Beginning in the early-to-mid 20th century, modernism solved critical material crises. It introduced mass-produced steel, glass, and reinforced concrete. This allowed cities to scale rapidly, clear out squalid slums, maximise floor space, and introduce unprecedented levels of hygiene, structural safety, and climate-controlled sanitation. Modernism adopted the mantra of Le Corbusier: “A house is a machine for living in.” By treating humans as predictable cogs inside a machine rather than complex biological organisms, it failed in three fundamental ways:

  1. Hyper-Rationalism and Visual Boredom: Modernism stripped buildings of ornament, texture, complexity, and regional identity, favouring flat glass facades and boxy concrete forms. Neuroaesthetic research shows that the human brain experiences cognitive stress and visual boredom when exposed to highly repetitive, unnatural, geometric monotony. Our visual cortex evolved to process the rich, fractal complexity of nature. When denied this, the mind feels trapped in a sensory vacuum.

By relying heavily on synthetic materials, sheetrock, and sealed glass towers wrapped in air conditioning, it isolated humans from the natural rhythms of the day, seasons, and local geology. This creates a state of environmental detachment, disrupting our natural circadian rhythms and removing the soothing tactile warmth of raw, organic materials.

The Destruction of the Threshold: Modernist urban planning prioritized the automobile over the pedestrian, replacing historic squares and intimate alleyways with massive highways and sprawling parking lots. Crucially, it erased the architectural threshold. Modern buildings often dump an individual directly from a chaotic multi-lane street into a harsh, echoing lobby with no sensory transition zone. This abrupt shift deprives the nervous system of the buffer time it needs to downshift from public alertness to private peace.

THE LIMITS OF DESIGN: WHERE IT FAILS AS A SOLUTION

While human flourishing is heavily influenced by design, it cannot be reduced entirely to a design problem. Treating it as purely an engineering task leads to a dangerous pitfall: spatial determinism (the false belief that a perfect building will automatically create perfect human lives).

  • The Requirement of Agency: A resort can offer the ultimate peaceful layout, but if a person brings their unaddressed trauma, demanding workload, or toxic relationships into that space, the architecture cannot heal them on its own.
  • Socioeconomic Realities: Flourishing requires systemic stability – financial security, social justice, and healthcare. The most beautifully designed public park in the world cannot solve human suffering if the community surrounding it lacks basic resources or safety.
